Surfrider Foundation Annual Beach Clean-Up
Three Capes Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation will hold their annual TDM beach clean-up event again this year on July 5. You can see from the photos taken last year the enormous amount of firework debris and trash left behind and picked up by volunteers the day after the popular July 4 holiday. The clean-up event last year saw TDM neighbors, visitors, and many people from near and far assisting in the clean-up efforts. A sincere thanks to the local State Park staff for hauling away the debris and their assistance in helping our community stay safe during the busy holiday. Many thanks to Lisa Macy Baker and the Surfrider Foundation for all of their stewardship efforts for the TDM beach and organizing this important event again this year. Fireworks are prohibited on all Oregon beaches, please share this info with anyone visiting or renting your TDM property.
Tierra del Mar Neighbor Call to Action for Beach Clean Up
A big thank you to Candace and Dave Churchley for reaching out to TDMCA and fellow neighbors recently to share the word about how much trash and debris was accumulating on the beach. Candace and Dave frequently walk the beach to pick up what some beach goers leave behind and what washes up with the high tides. TDMCA sent the word out to the community and provided SOLVE bags which are also available to everyone for pick up at the community hall. The results of the recent call to action clean up from our community members can be seen in the photo to the right. A big thank you to everyone who stepped up to help. All debris from the beach should be left at the marine debris watch sign at the south beach entrance.
Water Quality Testing
The Blue Water Task Force provides vital water quality information to protect public health at the beach. Surfrider chapters use this volunteer water testing program to raise awareness of local pollution problems and to bring together communities to implement solutions. Surfrider Foundation volunteers collect water samples for processing at Tillamook Estuaries Partnership’s lab. Bryan Quan of Pier Ave is the volunteer collecting samples for TDM. Sampling frequency and season is every two weeks and year-round. Blue Water Task Force labs measure fecal indicator bacteria levels in recreational waters and compare them to water quality standards set to protect public health. Community Hall Project Updates
Our community hall on Bilyeu Ave enjoys a great history and has been the hub of our community for several decades. Over the years, the hall, garage, and surrounding grounds have all been maintained, repaired, and renovated almost exclusively through the volunteer efforts of our community members.
We shared in our last TDMCA newsletter, that the time has come again for some needed building repairs and maintenance to our community hall. We started out by addressing the landscaping needs first and have been working on this all spring. Next is the repair of the south exterior wall cedar shingle repair/replacement. After the shingle repair on the south wall is completed, the next step is to paint the exterior of the hall. If you are interested in volunteering any of your time, skills, or donating materials to this project, please let us know, we greatly appreciate any assistance you can offer. We hope to complete the repairs and painting by the end of 2022. If you are able to help out with any part of our repair projects, we would love to hear from you!
Update on Tierra Del Mar Campground
The new recreational campground development being proposed for Tierra Del Mar on the east side of Floyd Avenue is still undecided. The Tillamook County Planning Commission’s decision to approve the conditional use request to allow the development of the 19-site campground has been appealed. The Tillamook County Board of Commissioners held a public hearing on April 25 to hear the appeal but it was continued until June 1, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. Property owners for the campground are Oregon Treehouse Partners, LLC based out of Portland. There has been considerable reaction from the TDM community via public comments submitted to the county citing concerns including strain on existing resources and public facilities, parking, appropriateness of project for a residential area, increase in tourists to the community, increased traffic, water availability, and impacts to designated wetlands.
